You are looking at a metal cast sculpture made in memory of the coffin ships during the famine at the site of Croagh Patrick. The sculpture is and 18th century tall ship. It depicts the mass evacuation of people trying to escape certain death in Ireland from the Irish Potato Famine 150 years ago. Hundreds of thousands of people died on the ships trying to cross the Atlantic to America, many dying of the fever. The famine turned vessels like this into giant coffins referred to today as "The Coffin Ships". If you look closely at the ship you will notice that there are skeleton ghosts that entwine together as they fly in and out and encircle the ship in ghastly fury. If you were ever to travel to the Holy Pilgrimage site of Croagh Patrick, or participate in the mass pilgrimage on the last Sunday of July for the climb to the top of Croagh Patrick Mountain, you would see this sculpture there. Directly behind the sculpture is the mountain of Croagh Patrick, its markings are unmistakable. If you can withstand the ascent to the top of Croagh Patrick the views over Clew Bay are surely fantastic and breathtaking.
