"The Moss Cross 2" Co. Limerick

This is a gravestone at a Limerick grave. Just behind this cross of Jesus, about 100 yds. or so, are the remains of a large soup house or, easier to say, resting house for the fevered and famished people of Ireland at the famine times 150 years ago when millions died. It is said people by the score came down from the hills and countryside to this site. There wasn't time to craft gravestones for everyone. This stone to me is symbolic of the mass grave which really exists here. The sadness expressed on the face of Jesus could not be more real. I affectionately call this "The Moss Cross" because of the lichens and moss growing on the stone. The sienna and white colors contrasted to the blackish stone are accurate to what it is like in person. God bless the Irish!
